Patrick Lay, Director for Second Winds Community Band of McMinnville, Oregon

Mark traces his musical career back to the age of 5, when his tyrannical mother forced him to play piano. After 4 years of piano lessons and recitals, Mark begged his dad for the chance to play the trumpet in the grade school band (providing an escape from the piano). Dad relented, and starting in 4th Grade, a trumpet has been his constant companion (although his Mom still made him play the piano).

Mark is a graduate of George Fox College (now George Fox University) with a degree in Music Education. Mark's post-graduate work includes Levels 1 and 2 Master Teacher Certificates for the American Orff-Schulwerk Association (Western Oregon State University, Seattle Pacific University); Instrumental Conducting (Portland State, Western Oregon State University, University of Oregon); and Vocal Conducting (University of Portland).

Mark's teaching career includes: Elementary Music Specialist, K-6, Beginning and Intermediate Bands and 5/6 Grade Choir (North Plains Elementary, North Plains, OR); Middle School Band/Chorus, High School Jazz Band/Jazz Choir, High School Concert Band/Concert Choir (Dayton Middle/Senior High School, Dayton, OR); and College Vocal Music Methods for Elementary, Middle and Senior High School (George Fox University, Newberg, OR).

In addition to being the Musical Director of Second Winds Community Band, Mark plays lead trumpet in the Frank Messina Big Band, and Freddy & The Stump Jumpers Dixieland Band. In his spare time he is the Minister of Music at Pioneer Evangelical Church in Dayton, and is the Music and Artistic Director for the Dayton Community Chorus.
